How do you apply to the program? How much money can a video creator make on News Break? The Creator Program for video content is still very new, but in this article we are going to share what we know so far after joining the program. If you are a small video content creator looking for ways to earn money AND expand your audience, the News Break Creator Program may be a good option to consider.
**June 7, 2021 Program Update is provided at the end of the article. News Break is now NewsBreak without the space and there have been changes to the Creator Program for submitting articles (not video content).
About two months ago we were contacted by a News Break Business Development Manager who thought our video content would be a great fit for the platform AND they paid $100 for each upload.
At first we kind of thought it was a too good to be true situation, but after a few weeks we thought about it some more and looked into the platform.
We found that News Break has 45 MILLION active monthly users and the News Break app was rated #1 Google Play and #2 in the App Store for News apps in 2020. We ended up emailing back and forth with our News Break contact before we finally decided to submit our application and give it a try. The application to the Creator Program can be found here. And if you want to test out the app before considering applying, the News Break app can be downloaded here. Full disclosure: these are our affiliate links and we will receive a commission if you are accepted to the program and submit content or download the News Break app.
We found the application process to be quick and painless, requiring very basic contact information and social media accounts. We were approved within a day or two, but the website does indicate it can take up to 5-7 days.
After being accepted to the Creator Program we had to confirm our Creator Account information via email and agree to the terms and services. The next step was to create our profile in the News Break Creator Platform. This involved adding a picture, writing a short introduction to our channel, adding our external website and setting up our direct deposit.
Next we had to determine which content would be appropriate for our audience. We are used to creating content for YouTube and knew we would need to adjust our editing to fit the News Break guidelines. News Break has a mission to “revitalize the local news scene and help locals connect with their communities”. We had to think about what content would appeal to viewers in our area. Once we identified our content we had to re-work it a bit to follow the News Break guidelines. We removed our logos from the content, along with any mention of linking to content or products on other platforms (like YouTube and Amazon). This was something we were concerned with when we were deciding to sign up for the program. In the end, we decided the potential exposure on this relatively new and highly successful news app was worth the effort of having to re-work some of our content.
Once our first video was ready, we uploaded it to the platform. We found this process to be much more simple compared to the process on YouTube. In order to publish a video the platform requires a title and description, that’s it. The title can include up to 100 characters and the description only allows for 1,000 characters. Once published we had to wait for the video to go through the review process. This process was completed in less than 12 hours, and our first video was live. If you are interested you can check it out here.
We really didn’t know what to expect but after an hour or so we started seeing the analytics in our Creator Account. In the first day our video received over 4,300 views. After 6 days on the platform we already had over 50 followers and over 5,500 views!
Thinking back to our experience on YouTube and how long it took us to get over 50 subscribers and 5,000 views we thought these stats were pretty good. But I do want to mention that the analytics on the News Break platform are pretty scarce compared to the data shared on YouTube. Currently we are not able to see the average time watched and many other stats we are used to reviewing on our YouTube Channel. We do hope this is an area that continues to improve as the platform continues to adjust to including local video content.
Now, let’s get to the most important piece of information, and that is the money. After our video was reviewed and approved it took about a day for our $100 to show up in our Creator Account. The site does indicate it can take up to 48 hours. Creators are then paid on a monthly basis, the payment type depends on how you set up your account.
When we applied to the program News Break was offering $100 sign on base pay per approved upload for the first three calendar months, with a monthly cap of $2,000. We are still awaiting additional information on the payment arrangement after the base pay time frame has expired, but until then we plan to continue to share our content on the News Break platform. At this time we don’t know how long News Break will be offering the sign on base pay. We do know for written articles the platform does offer ad share revenue, we are hoping News Break will eventually include video content in the ad share revenue but for now we will have to wait to find out.
So far we are impressed with our experience in the News Break Creator Program and are excited about expanding the exposure of our content that we love to create and share. If we can reach a whole new audience by engaging with the News Break community, why not give it a try? We see this as a great opportunity for small video content creators to grow their following and make a bit of money along the way. We hope to continue to see success in the program.
We know there will be more to come on the News Break Creator Program for video creators and we will update this article (or link to a new one) as more information becomes available. If you have any questions about the program, let us know in the comments!

June 7, 2021 Update: News Break has made a slight change to the name and is now NewsBreak without the space. Changes have been made to the Creator Program for those who wish to submit articles to the platform. Anyone can now register for an account in the Creator Program to submit articles. However, in order for your articles to be monetized you must meet eligibility requirements of at least 200 followers and 10 published articles. At this time this change only applies to article submissions. Currently video creators still need to apply and be accepted into the Creator Program.
