In April Skylar planned a weekend to visit a handful of the natural springs in Florida. Poe Springs was our first stop.

Poe Springs is located in High Springs, Florida. One can access this spring by land or water. We drove to Poe Springs Park and walked to the springs from the parking lot. There is no entrance fee for this park and is a budget friendly stop. The park is not open every day so be sure to check their schedule before visiting. When we visited the park was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Around the parking lot there were bathrooms with running water, a small play ground and covered picnic areas.
Signs easily directed us to the trail to Poe Springs. It was maybe a five minute walk from the car. There were restrooms near the springs but the buildings did not have running water. There were also picnic areas at the springs.
Since this was our first stop we didn’t spend much time in the water. There were stairs leading into the springs into water about 2-3 feet deep. We walked around in the shallow areas and the water was chilly but refreshing. There is an underwater cave at Poe, and the depth reaches about 25 feet. If we had visited later in the day when it was a bit warmer we would have tried to explore under water.
Visitors swim, snorkel, kayak, paddleboard and canoe at Poe. The springs can also be accessed by the Santa Fe River. The water was shallow where the springs converged with the river and a nice tree caught Skylar’s eye that overlooked the river.
We were able to wade across the springs to climb out on the tree. He ended up jumping into the river – there was a pretty good current and it wasn’t as deep as we expected. He is a strong swimmer and was able to swim against the current back to shallow water. He did touch the bottom of the river when he jumped, but thankfully was not injured.
Poe is a free attraction that is not as busy as some of the other springs. The shallow areas would be good for children and those who only want to wade in the springs. It would also interest those who want to explore an underwater cave. More information about visiting Florida springs can be found on the Florida Springs website. The site includes hours of operation, addresses and directions for the springs. It also includes a Spring Locator Map.
