Finding Las Paylas
We spent five days in Puerto Rico in October 2018. Two of the days we spent time around Luquillo and decided to check out Las Paylas, the local natural waterslide. We enjoyed an hour or so sliding down the waterfall and climbing on the rocks. Google maps was able to navigate us to the general area of the entrance to Las Paylas. There is a gate and a sign so you know you are in the right place. We included footage of the entrance in our video below. We drove down past the gate to park at the private residence. It is a small lot on private property and parking was $5. We were told you could park on the road and pay an entrance fee, but the road was a bit narrow and $5 was totally worth the time we spent around the waterslide.
It was a few minute walk down the path to the water. Tennis shoes or water shoes would be preferable – mainly because part of the path was muddy when we visited and our flip flops would get stuck in the mud, and the mud was slick.
The Natural Waterfall Slide
We started out taking the plunge down the waterslide. It was pretty slippery climbing up to the entrance point for those without water shoes.
During our visit it rained at some point every day so the flow of the water was pretty intense. A local showed us the best spot to enter the slide and encouraged us to lean forward and keep our arms out but elbows in.
I only went down once. It was fun BUT one of the curves bruised my tailbone pretty badly – it took awhile to heal with help from a chiropractor and acupuncturist.
I would go back but would only try the slide if the water flow was less intense. My husband didn’t have any injuries until he tried to go down holding a camera, that led to his elbow getting banged up. For footage of that plunge check out our video below.
Climbing Around Las Paylas
After we decided we had enough being beat up by the slide we climbed down the rocks to the pool of water below. The view of the water and rocks were beautiful.
We spent time hanging out on the rocks enjoying the view and the sounds of the water. This was an inexpensive way to experience the natural beauty of Puerto Rico.
We could have spent more time exploring around the rocks and the lower pool but of course it started to rain so we climbed back up to the car to head to our next adventure.
